Process Paper

Throughout my life I have always been interested in technology, particularly involving space, yet I have never found a good time to truly dig into and learn more about how humanity first crossed the seemingly unbreakable boundary around our planet. Once I found this year’s theme was about breaking barriers, I realized the Space Race fits perfectly.  The Space Race does not only break a huge amount of physical barriers, it also helps break political barriers as well.
To kick off my research, I went to my school library to search for books on the Cold War and the Space Race. After I had found a few books, I began to search online. I started by collecting generalized background information from a variety of websites, as well as databases which lead me to other more specific sources. After I had obtained a large amount of information on the Cold War and how it led to the Space Race, I began to narrow my search to focus on the specific events in the race and all their impacts. Also at this time, I reached out to some experts to ask their opinion in a few areas. My final step in researching was to research the specific political impacts of the Space Race.
I felt a website was the best way for me to display my project for several reasons. I knew I wanted to do a website right away, as I have always liked technology and have been interested in it. A website dealt with technology the most, and I felt it would give me a healthy challenge in creating it. A website also fit well with my topic. The Space Race is all based on technology and how to improve it, so I felt a website would be a great example of using more technology to develop my project. For my website theme, I made it with a basic and easy to understand theme in mind, in order to represent the simpler technology in past years. I also included a small space theme to represent my topic.
I believe my topic of the Space Race fits very strongly in the theme of “Breaking Barriers in History.” The Space Race pushed the Americans and the Soviets to break several barriers that would have otherwise been standing until much later. They broke the physical barriers of Earth’s atmosphere, as well as putting a human on the moon. My topic also relates to the theme because it broke political barriers. During the Space Race and before it in the Cold War, tensions between the USA and the USSR were very high, and a huge war was a constant threat. However, once the Americans landed on the moon causing them to win the Space Race, the barrier that was built up between the two countries in the previous years was broken. The tensions were eased, and soon after there was a cooperative mission to space between the two countries, the first of its kind.
